      Discover Argassi

Venetian Bridge: Literally in the sea in 10 meters distance from Argasi’s seashore is located the old bridge. This landmark of Argasi was built at the beggining of the 19th century

Domenegini Tower: Memories from the historic past of Argasi overbearing monuments which lay sparsely around the location. Probably the oldest of all, the Domenegini Tower is dated since the 17th century.

Aquaduct Vrysakia: One of the finest buildings hidden in dense vegetation is the old Aquaduct located in “Vrysakia”. It was built in the 19th century collecting the water from the natural springs and through a complex pipe system distributed the water to Zakynthos Town. The most interesting piece of architecture feature is “Vourderis Camara”.This magnificent bridge is 15 meters high and has a series of archways bearing the pipes which brought water to the main town. It was constructed during the period of British rule and legend has it that Kolokotronis, who lived on Zakynthos 15 years before the 1821 war of independence, was very fond of this place and used to ride his horse over the bridge.

Mountain of Skopos: A beautiful trail From Argasi to explore the low Mountain of Skopos walking in a relatively approachable road that leads you to the peak of the mountain. At the heigth of 450 metres you will feel rewarded by the astonishing views of the island. The views make all the walk here worthwhile. In the rocky landscape is the imposing Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa which was built in the mid of 15th century and is one of the distinctive Monasteries on the island. At this point there was the Temple of Artemis in ancient years.

Monastery Panagia Skopiotisa: The monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa is located near the top of Mount Skopos in south-eastern Zakynthos. The monastery was constructed in 1624 within the ruins of an older monastery. The whole complex also acted as a watchtower for Zakynthos Town and a larger part of the island. The older monastery is thought to have been built on the site of an ancient temple to the Greek goddess, Artemis. The course is surrounded by the characteristic mediterranian vegetation and Maquis of the Ionian Islands. The katholikon (main church of the monastery) of the monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa is built according according to a Greek cross-plan with some small variations and a somewhat oval-shaped dome with eight sides. Interestingly, the general architectural style of the katholikon more closely resembles post-Byzantine designs similar to churches built in the Cyclades rather than the design preferred locally like the typical single-aisled basilica plan exemplified by Agios Nikolaos to Molou in Zakynthos Town. However, the oval-shaped dome references more Western traditions.
